Harnesses are becoming increasingly popular with dog owners. A properly fitted dog harness is more secure than a dog collar and allows dog owners to worry less about possible escapes.
Harnesses are also safer for dog's necks - especially puppies, smaller dogs, and dogs with health issues.
The Two Main Types of Dog Harnesses
There are two main types of dog harnesses - the back attach and the front attach harness.
While they look almost identical, they function quite differently from each other.
Back Attached Dog Harness
The most commonly seen harness is the back attach harness. This harness is a great choice for most dogs that are properly leash trained and do not pull.
This type of dog harness is not recommended for pulling dogs that have not been leash trained.
Because the harness is attached at the back of the dog, dogs that pull actually pull more with this type of harness than with a collar. This is because they have more leverage when the leash is not attached to their necks.
Front Attached Dog Harness
This is where the other, front-attached harness comes in. This type of harness actually discourages pulling by having the attachment in the front of the dog versus it's back.
When the dog pulls, their heads and frontal focus gets interrupted because the leash attached at the front will force the dog to have to turn their focus backwards.
This action causes the pulling dog to learn that pulling is counterproductive. Learn more about no-pull dog harnesses here.
Back Attach Harnesses - Great For Active Shiba Inus
Back attach harnesses are commonly used for activities such as hiking and running or cycling with your dogs.
These types of harnesses are safer than collars or front attach harnesses during activities that require 'power' walking or running and increased attention.
Back attach harnesses allow you to safely slow your dog down during high speed sprints without worry of choking or harming your dog's neck.
Harnesses are also handy during hikes. In areas that are difficult for your dog to traverse, you can easily pick up your dog by the harness and continue with the hike.
