A Shiba Inu Rottweiler mix, or Rottie Inu, is an unusual crossing of a pure bred Shiba Inu (Shiba) and a Rottweiler (Rottie)

You might be planning on adopting of even better - rescuing a Shiba Inu Rottweiler mix - and want to figure out if their temperament, personality, and size meshes with your lifestyle.

We have everything you need to know about the Rottie Inu right here, so let’s begin.

Shiba Inu Rottweiler Mix - Temperament

Rottweilers and Shibu Inu dogs are two very distinct breeds, each with different personalities and quirks.

Take, for instance, the Rottie Rumble or Shiba Scream.

Whether these personality traits show up in your Shiba Inu Rottweiler mix depends on a lot of biological factors. Understand that either, neither, or both could happen.

Rottweilers are known to be rowdy, playful, and domineering. When not properly disciplined, Rottweilers can develop behavioral issues that make them dangerous to be around simply due to their size and sheer strength

Partner that with one of the most dramatic dog breeds on the planet, the Shiba Inu, and you have yourself a stubborn, tenacious, and crafty dog that needs a knowledgeable and capable handler.

Mental and physical stimulation is an absolute must for Rottie Inu. Look into agility course training, too. Giving a high energy dog such as this will prevent them from becoming bored and destructive.

The key to leading a healthy and happy life with your Rottie Inu is to start socialization early. Expose them to other dogs, people, experiences, sounds, etc. Obedience training needs to follow soon after as well.

You can anticipate a well socialized Rottie Inu being good with children, as well as protective of them when a stranger comes around.

Properly socialized Rottie Inus will also do well with other dogs, though due to their high prey drive, may chase smaller animals.

Temperament Profile:

  • Confident
  • Playful
  • Protective guardian of the household
  • Highly intelligent to a point of stubbornness

Physical Characteristics of a Rottie Inu

Depending on gene dominance, A Rottie Inu will have various features from both parents.

Since Rottweilers are black and orange-red or tan with no variations, it is highly likely that a mixed breed puppy will also display this coloring. Shiba Inu can be a rusty orange and white or black, tan, and white.

That said, there's also a chance that you get a fox-colored Rottweiler from this unusual pairing. This would certainly be a striking dog to behold.

Rotties do not have as dense a coat as the Shiba Inu, but a mixed breed often has a blend of both. You should groom your furry companion often to ensure that their skin and fur stays healthy. This also helps with your dog getting comfortable with handling.

Shedding is most likely going to happen. Maybe some moderate drooling as well.

Rottie Inus typically stand between 17 -20 inches tall and weigh about 45 pounds.

Rotties have a longer spine than Shiba Inu, so a mixed breed between the two often has more length with a gentle tapering of the hips. A slight curl in the tail—hinting to the Shiba Inu—is common in this mix. Ears may be triangular and standing at attention or folded over.

Facial features will usually be a blend of characteristics. Often times, the shorter snout of the Rottweiler pairs with the large expressive eyes of the Shiba Inu, creating an intelligent looking dog.

The sides of the head will typically be sleek, running towards a muscular, powerful neck and shoulders.

Health of a Rottie Inu

The average life expectancy of a Rottie Inu is between 10-14 years. Rottweilers do not live as long as Shiba Inu, which adversely affects their lifespan.

With quality care and love, though, your dog may exceed the life expectancy.

Shiba Inu Rottweiler mixes are at risk of developing the following health concerns:

  • Cancer – mainly from the Rottweiler side; your dog may need to go on a vaccination regimen and other forms of care to prevent cancer from developing
  • Hip dysplasia
  • Heart conditions
  • Eye diseases
  • Allergies
  • Patellar luxation

Exercise Requirements

Rottie Inus have moderate exercise requirements. They're not overly playful and energetic and enjoy lazy days just as much as action-packed ones.

For this reason, you should walk your Shiba Inu Rottweiler mix as often as you can and provide them with mental stimulation in the form of games, etc.

Make sure there is a fence, as any Shiba Inu mix has a high prey drive and will give chase.

Most Rottweiler mixes inherit the Rottie’s love of water and herding, so you can try those activities with your Shiba Inu Rottweiler mix.

Conclusion

Hoping to bring a Shiba Inu Malamute mix home? These dogs are going to be larger, fluffier, and a bit more stubborn than a purebred Shiba Inu.

The best household for this kind of dog is one with an active family who has time to spend with their companion.

Shiba Inu Malamute mixes need routine exercise and discipline, but if those needs are met, they will be loyal, loving, and friendly companions for everyone in the household.
